Back in the day when it was expensive to get a network interface they decided to breakup the cards into ‘addons’.
You could find these MAU/AUI converters for 10BASE5 (thicknet) and 10BASE2 (thinnet). But around 1990 these were already absolete as BNC and Ethernet was becoming the standard. Where Ethernet won in the long run. Still its fun to visit these old network things…
